How to Join MHS Bands

Rising  9th Graders
To continue with band in high school at Millbrook, you would need to check the bolded Band (year-long) option on top of the Fine and Performing Arts section of the form. This will automatically put you in the Symphonic Band or Percussion Ensemble (our younger band classes). Later in the year (around April), students will have the option to audition for Wind Ensemble (our advanced group) if they would like. More information on auditions will be coming soon.
All Wind Players will be put in year-long blocked band courses. Percussionists who are not in Wind Ensemble will be placed into an A or B day percussion course that meets on a rotating basis (takes up one less elective spot).

Frequently Asked Questions:
  • Are all incoming students required to audition?
    • No, it is optional. We encourage every student to audition to ensure they are placed into the correct band class, but the choice is ultimately up to them! Audition solos are posted below.
  • Does this form sign me up for marching band?
    • No, marching band is an extracurricular group that meets after school and has a separate registration process. We highly encourage every freshman who does not play a fall sport to join marching band, although it is not a requirement.
  • Do I have to be in a band class to join the marching band?
    • Yes! To join any extracurricular ensemble our program offers (marching, jazz, or winter groups) students must first be enrolled in a band class. The only exception to this rule is color guard.

Audition sign-ups and materials for next year will be posted here—stay tuned!

Step 1 (Required):

Put Band on your Registration Card

Registering for a band class not only gets band on your school schedule, it opens the doors to our amazing extracurricular offerings. Groups like Marching Band, Jazz Band, Winter Percussion, Winter Guard, and others are only available if you enroll in a band class. Although it’s not required, we strongly encourage all band students to participate in Marching Band.

One exception: Marching Band Color Guard members are not required to be in a band class.

Step 2 (Optional):

Sign Up For A Class Placement Audition

Auditions are optional but highly encouraged! We want to ensure we place every student in the correct class, so they are both properly challenged and not overwhelmed. Auditions are very informal, and will include a short solo and a couple of scales.

On the audition forms, students auditioning for our beginning Symphonic Band should play the A sections. Those auditioning for our advanced Wind Ensemble, should play the B Section. In addition to the short solo excerpts students must also play their F (tongued), Eb (slurred), and D (tongued) Scales.

Step 3 (Highly Encouraged)

Attend Marching Band Reveal Night

This is our big Spring Marching Band event! Here we reveal our show theme for upcoming season, Freshman get to meet others in their sections, and parents will learn all about Marching Band at the Parent Meeting. If you are planning on joining Marching Band or if you’re still on the fence, we encourage all students to attend to learn more about marching and our exciting upcoming season.
